How to get to the Christmas markets 2023?
Getting to the Christmas markets is a breeze, thanks to the well-connected transportation system. Here’s a guide on how to make your way to the enchanting markets.
By Air:
The most convenient way is to fly to one of those magical towns. You can find the cheapest flights on Ryanair and Wizzair.
By train:
Thanks to the excellent connection of all Central European cities by rail, you can move to all Christmas markets. Between the cities of Budapest, Bratislava and Prague, an international train marked EC (EuroCity) passes every 2 hours. You can get to Vienna with a fast and convenient bus or train connection from Bratislava.
The seat is never included in the price of the seat, so you buy it separately. You can purchase a 2nd class or 1st class ticket. There is almost no difference between them. The train also has dining cars in which you can have soft and cold snacks, hot drinks, cold drinks and even alcoholic drinks.
By Car:
I prefer travelling by train. EC (Eurocity) trains are very comfortable, safe and clean and affordable. I often used them on my way to the University. Keep in mind that these trains are used by many students, as I was, and it is necessary to purchase a seat.
A car is a very convenient way of transport, it allows you to travel whenever you want. However, keep in mind that parking is prohibited in city centres and parking can make your trip more expensive. Moreover, how could you taste the famous mulled wine if you are driving.
What is the most budget-friendly location for accommodation?
I recommend staying in the city centres and enjoying the Christmas atmosphere to the fullest. The old towns of these cities are like a walk in a historical movie. Baroque palaces, Gothic cathedrals are all around, while you walk along the original mediaeval streets. These cities breathe the atmosphere of the past like no other in the world.
Add to that Christmas lights everywhere around the house, decorations and Christmas trees. Doesn’t that sound magical? If you are lucky, you will also experience a real snowy Christmas.
Best place to stay in Vienna
Vienna is known for being relatively more expensive compared to some other Central European cities. Accommodation costs can vary, but generally, Vienna tends to have a higher price range for hotels and other lodging options – prices range during Christmas are around 150 EUR and higher/night in the city centre for couples.
Budget hotels in Bratislava
Bratislava is known for being budget-friendly, especially when compared to Western European capitals. You can find a range of accommodation options at various price points, and generally, Bratislava is considered more affordable for travellers – prices range during Christmas are around 90 EUR/night in the city centre for couples.

Budapest is often considered a more affordable place to stay. Accommodation costs in Budapest can be lower than in Vienna, but they still depend on factors like the type of accommodation and its location within the city. Prices range during Christmas are around 100 EUR/night in the city centre for couples.

Prague is also known for offering good value for money. Accommodation costs in Prague are often lower than in Vienna but can be slightly higher than in Budapest and Bratislava. The city has a diverse range of options, from budget hostels to luxury hotels. Prices range during Christmas are around 120 EUR and higher/night in the city centre for couples.
Christmas markets in Vienna: The Grand Dame of Elegance
I have to admit, even as a native Slovak, I love Vienna. Vienna is a beautiful imperial city with an incredible atmosphere of boulevards. It is clean, safe and charming. I love it, walking in it reminds me of the old days of Empress Sissi. When I walk through it, I feel like a queen and I am proud that we were a part of such a monarchy.
Vienna is beautiful in summer, but magical in winter, especially during the Christmas holidays. We have been travelling to the Christmas markets in Vienna since childhood. It reminds me of their beautiful clay mugs straight from the markets. Every year it has a new visual, so if you are a collector, be sure to buy one.
This tradition also works in other markets. At the first stand where you buy a drink, they will pour it into a returnable mug, which you can return and get your deposit back, or you can keep the mug as a gift.

My favourite markets are the ones on Rathausplatz. In front of the City hall (Rathaus) in the park you will also find an ice rink for children, Bethlehem and an exhibition of the Stations of the Cross. There is also a stage and many stalls with goodies.
The beautiful one – Christmas Village at Maria-Theresien-Platz- is set between the Museum of Natural History and the Art History Museum, this market features over 70 stalls, offering a mix of traditional and contemporary crafts, gifts, and culinary delights. They have the tastiest food in these markets, trust me I’ve tested it 🙂
A Winter Wonderland: Unwrapping the Charms of Bratislava’s Christmas Market
Are you looking for the friendly Christmas atmosphere of a small town under a castle on a hill? Bratislava offers beautiful views from the Danube to the castle on the hill. We will tell you a secret, you can also find Christmas markets in the courtyard of this castle. Specifically, the Medieval Markets at Bratislava Castle.
Here you will find wines according to old recipes, but also ideas for Christmas gifts in the form of handicraft products. You can enjoy mediaeval recipes, handicrafts, demonstrations of working procedures with craftsmen in traditional mediaeval clothing.

This year, the city has also prepared a zone for families with children with climbing frames, a Christmas forest and cottages for playing. It is forbidden to drink alcohol and smoke in this zone. It is something special for families with small children who want to enjoy the atmosphere of Christmas.
In the main square you will find beautiful Christmas trees, a stage and concerts by local artists. I will advise you on an amazing photo spot. Go up to the tower of the Old Town Hall Museum. You will see the whole old city from above. The canopies of the stalls, the Christmas lights in the background with the castle are a great background for Christmas photos.
Here, the scent of mulled wine and hearty Slovakian dishes mingles with the melodies of local musicians. Bratislava’s market radiates a cozy, intimate atmosphere, inviting visitors to explore the city’s history and traditions.
Christmas market in Prague: Fairy Tale Magic in the City of a Hundred Spires
Who does not know magical Prague. The metropolis of the Czech Republic as cut from a mediaeval movie. Prague attracts tourists with its charming streets of the Old Town. The cobblestone streets of Prague, adorned with Gothic and Baroque architecture, become even more enchanting during the holiday season.
Christmas Markets 2023 start on December 2, 2023 and end on January 6, 2024.
However, I recommend taking a walk along the lesser-known route along the Vltava under the Charles bridge. This neighbourhood is called Kampa. The path leads from Prague Castle to Vyšehrad along the famous Rašínovo embankment.
Prague’s Christmas market offers a fairy tale-like experience with its handcrafted ornaments, folk performances, and the irresistible aroma of Trdelník—a sweet pastry rolled in cinnamon and sugar.
